I was working in Heineken’s Puerto Rico office in 2010 when Heineken decided to close the office and move operations for the Americas Region to New York City. I was offered a great job in the regional office, and I was happy to make the move. Fast forward to 2015 and Heineken decided to close the New York City office and move operations to Miami. At this stage in my life, I was settled into New York City with two little kids (the third was born in 2017), and I wasn’t so excited to move again.
Coincidently, I was approached by Volcafe, the coffee division of ED&F Man, a global commodities company, to help them start up a B2B, green coffee, e-commerce business. I would also be head of finance for the Americas’ coffee business, and given the timing with what was going on at Heineken, I jumped at the opportunity. I spent two productive years working on the coffee startup (genuineorigin.com), with the first year building and launching the business, and the second year growing the business and stabilizing operations. After a series of changes in the senior management of the company, it was time to move on.
I quickly found a role at a DTC, luxury watch, e-commerce startup (troverie.com) that was pre-launch and pre-revenue. We built and launched the website, but unfortunately, customer demand wasn’t what we expected, and the business is reviewing strategic options.
