The website First Round posted a list of 40 Favorite Interview Questions from Some of the Sharpest Folks We Know.

I thought it would be interesting to share my answers to these questions.

At Troverie, I designed and implemented an Apple Watch trade in program. We were looking for ways to attract new customers with the premise that there was an untapped market of customers with old Apple Watches they didn’t want who would be interested in upgrading to a “real” watch if provided with a strong incentive.

The program had to be simple and low risk for the company: come to our website and request a prepaid shipping label, send us your Apple Watch (any model, any condition), and we would send you a gift card for $50 that you could use to buy a watch on our website. All proceeds from the program would be donated to charity.

The program had to appeal to a different customer segment: we played the green angle (don’t landfill your old watch) and the philanthropic angle (supporting the fight against childhood hunger) and a discounting strategy (with the gift card).

The program had to be cost efficient and scalable: The logistics of the program were pretty simple. We needed a way to get the word out about the program, we needed a landing page on our website where customers could learn about the program and request a mailing label, and we needed a way to get the watches back. If we didn’t spend a lot of money on customer outreach, the only risk was that we got too many watches back and they didn’t convert into new watch sales. This, we decided, would be a good problem to have.
