I was in a regional finance leadership role. I flew to meet with our accounting firm in the Caribbean. When I got to the office, everyone was looking very nervous. We chatted while we waited for the firm’s owner to arrive. About 20 minutes later, he comes in wearing a black suit and looking absolutely destroyed. Everyone is asking him how he’s doing, they haven’t seen him all week, they hope he’s well, etc. etc. No one says a word to me and finally, he tells me his mother died earlier that week. He knew I was flying down to see him and didn’t want to cancel. I couldn’t believe it and told him he really should have postponed the meeting. He insisted I stay, and we had an otherwise dull meeting about VAT and transfer pricing.
