Building A Business Model Template for Small Businesses and Startups
The business model template would start with what I call a “data dump” call (typically 1 hour) where you share everything about your business that you can with me. If there are any files that you want to send me following the call, that would be great. Following this, I would spend 1-2 hours reviewing, organizing, and synthesizing the information. Once I have a good idea about how your business operates, I would build a business model (either in Excel or Google Sheets) that is based on the business blueprint we discussed and key assumptions identified.
How to Change The Business Model Template
All assumptions in the model would be clearly identified so you can change them without breaking the model. The key to a good model is the ability to adapt it to changing circumstances. Any calculations and totals would also be clearly identified so you don’t touch them. It usually takes 3-5 hours to build the model. Then we can have a follow-up call where I show you the model, explain everything, answer any questions, and make any changes that may be needed. It may require a couple of followups to make sure everything is clear. The total time commitment is usually around 6-8 hours.
